Oral Cancer Screening

Our dedication to your dental care includes oral cancer screening. Each time you come in for a cleaning or examination part of our routine is to do an oral cancer screening. We feel this Is important for our patients because the rates of oral cancer continue to rise.

Every hour someone in the United States is diagnosed with oral cancer. It used to be most commonly found in the mouths of high risk patients (smokers, tobacco chewers, heavy drinkers). It is now becoming more common to see it in those with no high risk factors. There seems to be a correlation between HPV virus and the increasing number of younger patients and women between the age of 30 and 50.

If oral cancer is detected early the survival rate is about 90%, but if not detected until advanced stages, it is life-threatening with 5-year survival rate less than 50%.
